The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
