A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing secret information in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made cars.
He stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified level in any car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The broader defence environment underscores the importance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, from vehicle use to communication habits.
